A useful resume gives an employer clear evidence that you can do relevant work. For an early-career applicant, that evidence can come from projects, internships, volunteering or college responsibilities. The aim is to make your contribution understandable without inflating it.
Start with the vacancy
Save the job description and highlight the tasks, tools and requirements. Beside each important requirement, write an example you could discuss honestly in an interview. If you cannot provide one, mark the gap rather than adding the keyword anyway.
For an analyst vacancy, a project that cleans a dataset and explains the findings may be more relevant than a long list of unrelated certificates. For a customer-support vacancy, evidence of written communication and resolving queries may deserve more space.
A practical section order
- Name and contact: professional email, phone number and relevant portfolio link.
- Short summary, if it adds information: your focus and strongest relevant evidence.
- Experience or projects: put the more relevant section first.
- Education: course, institution and dates; supply marks when the application requires them.
- Skills: tools or methods you can actually demonstrate.
Follow the employer’s requested file format. Otherwise, use a readable document and check that its text can be selected and copied in the exported file. A simple layout is a sensible default, but no layout or keyword formula guarantees passage through every applicant tracking system.
Worked example: turn a task into evidence
The following examples are illustrative. They do not describe a real candidate or verified hiring outcome.
| Vague version | More informative version | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Worked on Excel | Cleaned a sample retail dataset in Excel, checked duplicate rows and built a weekly category-sales summary. | Names the task, method and output. |
| Good communication | Presented the project findings to classmates and revised the chart labels after feedback. | Shows the behaviour behind the claim. |
| Managed social media | Planned and scheduled event announcements, maintained the content calendar and answered participant queries. | Explains the scope without inventing growth figures. |
Use numbers when records support them. If you do not know the increase in sales or engagement, explain the deliverable and your responsibility instead. Do not estimate a percentage simply to make a bullet look impressive.
A sample fresher summary
Commerce graduate developing practical reporting skills through Excel and SQL projects. Built a sample inventory report and documented the checks used to find duplicate and missing records. Seeking an entry-level role involving data preparation and business reporting.
Replace the details with your own work. A summary is optional; remove it if it repeats the rest of the page without helping the reader.
Handle gaps and career changes plainly
Use accurate dates. You can give a brief description of a career break without disclosing private medical or family information. For a career change, explain the relevant transferable work, but do not rename your former job to imply experience you did not have.
Before sending
Check contact details, spelling, dates, file name and every link. Compare the final resume with the vacancy one more time. Ask someone to identify your strongest relevant experience after a short read. If they cannot, improve the order or wording. Keep a copy of the version submitted so interview preparation matches the application.
